A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease and in the planning, surgical placement, and maintenance of dental implants. After completing their dental school training, periodontists continue their education for three years to obtain a postdoctoral specialty degree in Periodontics.

Salary: Periodontist average salary is $136,029, median salary is $117,000 with a salary range from $66,000 to $395,200. Periodontist salaries are collected from government agencies and companies.


Periodontists are required to be licensed as a dentist and also as a periodontist. Each state’s Board of Dentistry license requirements vary. To become a licensed dentist, applicants must pass the National Board of Dental Examinations.
